Triumph Spitfire Mk 2 1965

The Spitfire Mk 2 was priced at around £550 for a brand new model. Its 4 cylinder engine provided more power than its predecessor through its revised camshaft gear and new manifold with a top speed of 96 mph. This was pretty impressive back then for a small, inexpensive sports car. It’s price tag (slightly higher than the Austin) was justified as each year it outsold the competition with around 37,000 models being produced in the Mark 2’s two year life span.

This compact British sports car, which has its name taken from the legendary fighter plane, certainly punched way above its weight back in the day. It may have only been a 1147cc engine but, with only 700KG to haul along, the performance is much better than you might think.

The Spitfire model was introduced at the London Motor Show in 1962 with the Mark 2 being introduced in 1965. After the success of the Austin-Healey Sprite, Triumph were convinced they could produce a better, more well manufactured sports car. Originally dubbed the ‘Bomb’, the project for the Spitfire was initially halted but, after a takeover from Leyland Motors in 1961, it was given the green light to proceed.
